Hydrangea
The hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) is a shrub belonging to the Hydrangeaceae family. It is native to Asia, mainly the eastern and southern parts of the continent. The species is very popular in North and South America, where it is considered an elite plant. Currently, hydrangea is very rarely found in its wild form. Both in its native country and on other continents, including Europe, it is a species cultivated in gardens, flower beds and, less frequently, in pots. Preserved hydrangea flowers are used to decorate rooms. They can be the main theme of dried bouquets.
What does a hydrangea look like?
The garden hydrangea is a shrub with a varied habit, which can take on a spherical, conical, spreading or irregular shape depending on how the plant is pruned. It grows to a height of approximately 1.5 metres. The shoots are covered with dark green leaves with serrated or jagged edges and an ovate shape. The most characteristic and spectacular part of the plant are its inflorescences, which can be admired from early summer to late autumn. The inflorescences then dry out, which means that they continue to decorate the space even after the first snowfall. They can be white, pink or red in colour. Interestingly, by acidifying the soil, you can obtain hydrangeas with blue flowers, as the species reacts to an increase in soil pH by changing the colour of its inflorescences. The more alkaline the soil, the more intense the pink or even red hue of the hydrangea flowers.
Hydrangea in the garden
Hydrangea is now very rare in the wild. However, it often appears in gardens, flower beds and squares. It can also be planted in a pot. The species is quite difficult to grow. The plant grows best in sunny or semi-shaded areas. It prefers humus-rich and semi-permeable soil, but does not tolerate heavy, clayey soils. Hydrangeas have high requirements in terms of soil fertility, so they should be fertilised regularly during the growth and flowering period. It is also important to ensure adequate soil moisture. Interestingly, the Latin name for hydrangea, Hydrangea, literally means ‘water bush’, which aptly explains the plant's need for water. Even with short periods of drought, the species wilts and dies.
Garden hydrangeas can be pruned to achieve the desired shape of the shrub. To do this, prune the flowers themselves. Be careful not to cut too low, as this may damage the buds, which are the flower buds for the following year. Since hydrangeas originate from a mild, warm climate, they are not frost-resistant. Therefore, the shrub should be protected from low temperatures during winter.
Uses of hydrangea
Hydrangeas are perfect for gardens. Impressive and lush, they look best on their own. They look great as solitary plants or as a group planted against a lawn background. It can be planted along the edges of paths, creating a magnificent, colourful row of flowers. Hydrangeas are also used to create informal hedges. Hydrangeas are rarely found in the company of other species.
The beautiful hydrangea blossoms are used to create bouquets. They look perfect in a simple glass vase. Sometimes they are also used to make bouquets and impressive arrangements for weddings or other special events. In this case, hydrangeas are the main theme – other plants are just an addition. They work best when paired with species with small flowers and surrounded by leaves.
Preserved hydrangeas are now also available. A special preservation method allows the flowers to last for up to several months. Preserved plants do not require watering. They retain the flexibility and appearance of fresh flowers, which is why they are valued for their charm and practicality. Dried hydrangeas, on the other hand, are extremely delicate. They crumble quickly, which is why the preserved variety is definitely a better choice.
Preserved hydrangeas look stunning on their own. They are the perfect decoration for glamorous interiors. They also work well in traditional and modern arrangements. The flowers can also be used to create stunning bouquets to decorate living and utility spaces. Preserved hydrangeas are also used to decorate wedding venues, especially for glamorous celebrations.
