Dried Protea

The exotic protea originates from South Africa. It grows in the form of shrubs or low trees. Its flowers grow downward, are pollinated by birds, and their seeds are carried by the wind.

The dried protea available at Blosmi features flowers ranging in color from yellow to orange to dark red. The protea heads are firmly attached to a strong brown branch.

Protea

Protea

Protea (Protea pendula) is a perennial plant belonging to the Proteaceae family. It is often referred to as the “flower of Prometheus.” The plant is native to South Africa – the flower is even one of the elements of the South African coat of arms. Interestingly, the species has adapted very well to the bush fires that occur there and can regenerate even when its habitat is completely consumed by fire. The secret lies in its strong and thick roots, which enable the plant to regenerate quickly. Outside of Africa, protea is found only as a cultivated species, grown mainly in homes and greenhouses. Its impressive inflorescences can be used to make beautiful bouquets with an exotic character. It is perfect for drying and creating dry compositions.

What does the protea look like?

Protea is a shrubby plant that grows up to 1.5 meters in height. Its stiff stems are adorned with impressive inflorescences with hairy leaves resembling petals. This makes the buds look like pine cones. When they open, long, tubular flowers appear. The plant blooms almost all year round. The stems of the protea are covered with alternating leaves covered with silver down. It is worth noting that the species is classified as a sugarbush. This means that it produces large amounts of nectar, which birds feed on, pollinating the plant in the process.

Protea in natural conditions and in cultivation

Under natural conditions, protea occurs exclusively in Africa. It grows most often between mountain slopes. It is also a plant that is part of fynbos, a formation that grows in coastal lowlands. The plant prefers sunny locations and well-drained soil. Outside its native continent, protea occurs only as a cultivated plant. In Europe, it is mainly found in greenhouses and conservatories, although it is increasingly appearing in homes as an exotic potted plant.

Growing protea is not easy. The plant usually grows from seeds, which should be planted in containers. It is important to ensure that the soil is suitable. Protea grows best in soil with low phosphate and nitrogen content. A mixture of peat and clayey sand with an acidic pH is therefore ideal. The optimal growing location is a sunny spot. Since protea is a thermophilic species, it is recommended to place it in the garden or on the balcony or terrace in spring and summer. When grown in a greenhouse, it requires ventilation in summer. In winter, during its dormant period, it prefers cooler rooms with temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius. Protea is resistant to pests and diseases. However, it is important to prune the plant regularly and remove dead or weakened shoots. The species also does not tolerate waterlogging.

Use of protea

Protea has been a popular cut flower for several years. It is used in special occasion bouquets. It often appears in wedding bouquets, giving them an exotic touch. When dried under the right conditions, protea flowers retain their shape and color. This makes them a fantastic option for dry arrangements. They work wonderfully as part of bouquets. Dried protea looks great when accompanied by grasses, including those dyed bright orange or red. They can be combined with sorghum, lagurus, or phalaris. They also make an interesting duo with stipa or short-cut pampas grass. The bright color of protea makes it an excellent companion for purple-colored dried flowers – gomphrena, thistles, or gypsophila. Colored amaranth will be a beautiful addition to the composition. It is worth remembering that protea also looks beautiful on its own. Placed in a simple glass vase, it will be a wonderful decoration for a modern interior.
