Dried stipa

Dried feather grass, also known as stipa or pony tail grass, is an ornamental grass characterised by extremely soft and delicate panicles. It is available in natural and dyed versions. Both fit perfectly into boho and rustic interiors.

Stipa

Stipa pennata

Feather grass (Stipa pennata) is a perennial grass belonging to the Poaceae family. It is native to Europe. The plant is also found in Mongolia, China, Siberia and the Caucasus. Dried feather grass is widely used in floristry. Its delicate, soft-touch shoots are perfect for dry bouquets. They can also be added to compositions of fresh plants or to wreaths and floral arrangements.

What does feather grass look like?

Feather grass grows to a height of 30 to 60 cm. It forms dense, compact clumps with light and dark green, lanceolate leaves hanging down in an arch. At the end of May, feather grass develops long, silvery inflorescences resembling bird feathers - hence the adjective in the plant's species name. This is due to the long, spirally twisted awns of the glumes, which give the flowers a light appearance. Swaying in the wind, they make the plant look extremely original. Dried feather grass, on the other hand, brings delicacy and subtlety to floral compositions.

Stipa in natural conditions and in cultivation

Under natural conditions, feather grass usually occurs in sunny locations, especially on dry grasslands. It is also found on grassy formations, primarily in steppes.

In recent years, the plant has been gaining popularity as a garden species. Its advantage, apart from its interesting appearance, is that it is easy to grow. The best location for feather grass is a sunny spot with well-drained, sandy soil that is not too rich in organic matter. The plant cannot tolerate waterlogging, as this causes the roots to rot and die. However, it is resistant to pest infestation.

The use of feather grass

Feather grass looks wonderful in gardens and flower beds. It looks best when planted in groups. It is perfect for prairie gardens and rockeries, creating an interesting duo with other colourful perennials. It can also be used to line paths. It looks great against plants with dark green leaves. It is worth noting that Stipa is suitable for growing in pots. In this form, it can decorate balconies or terraces.

Dried stipa in floristry

Feather grass is also used in floristry. Its extremely delicate shoots look impressive on their own or in bouquets. Placed in a simple ceramic vase, they make a beautiful decoration for a modern interior or boho space. Feel free to combine them with other dried flowers to give your composition a lightness. Stipa perfectly complements both popular types of dried flowers, such as linum, lagurus, triticale and phalaris, as well as original specimens, such as celosia, glixia and anaphalis. It is suitable for interior decorations and special occasion bouquets. Recently, it has even appeared in bridal bouquets, especially if the wedding has a rustic or boho theme. The availability of dyed feather grass further increases its floristic potential and provides endless inspiration.
