Delphinium

The delphinium is an easy-to-grow perennial, popular both in Europe and Asia. It is worth noting that some parts of this plant are poisonous. Its properties can be used to prepare an ecological pest control. Most of all, however, it is used as an ornamental plant that successfully decorates flower beds and cut flower bouquets.

Delphinium
Delphinium (Delphinium cultorum) is a perennial plant that is widely distributed throughout central and eastern Europe and Asia. Delphinium is a member of the buttercup family. Popular a few decades ago in our grandmothers' gardens, it is now making a big comeback. Its beautiful, strongly coloured flowers are distinguished by their durability, making them perfect for the vase. It is also worth noting that dried delphinium is very popular. It works wonderfully with other dried plants, grasses and foliage to provide endless decorative inspiration.

What does a Delphinium look like?
The most impressive part of the delphinium is the decorative inflorescence of five-petaled flowers gathered in dense clusters. Each is topped with a distinctive spur, which gives the plant its name. Its Latin name, in turn, refers to the dolphin, whose silhouette resembles the buds of the individual flowers. Spurge usually takes on shades of blue, although white, purple or pink varieties are also found. The length of the inflorescences can reach up to 1 metre in height, and the entire stem up to 2 metres. In addition, the large, palmately feathery leaves, which form a large rosette at the base of the stems, are an ornamental feature of delphinium. The inflorescences are excellent for drying. They do not lose their colour and add an interesting element to the composition. They also look beautiful solo, placed in a slender vase.

Delphinium in the wild and in the garden
Under natural conditions, delphiniums grow in areas of the northern hemisphere. They grow on fertile soils in sunny locations. They can be found in fields, meadows and wastelands. The plant is also a popular bedding plant in Europe. As it produces long stems, it is ideal for planting in rows along paths or garden alleys. It can be planted against a house wall or fence. Delphinium, especially the blue-flowered variety, is excellent company for other bedding species. It looks great next to rudbeckia, coneflowers, boysenberries or lupines. It can also be used as a complement to poppies, lilacs, goldenseal and even rose bushes. You can also plant holly alongside ornamental grasses. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that some parts of the plant are poisonous.
Garden Delphinium is easy to care for. The only thing it needs is a good soil. It should be fertile, humus and well-drained. The plant does not like acidic soils. It needs to be watered in dry periods. A sunny, warm, sheltered position is best for holly. In the shade it produces sparse flowers. The ground can be fertilised 2-3 times a season with compost or mineral fertiliser. Garden holly is frost resistant. However, it is advisable to cover young seedlings with fleece or leaves in the first winter. Please note that tall spurge shoots tend to lie down, so it is a good idea to support them with poles. The plant flowers between June and July. When pruned after the first flowering, it also produces inflorescences in September. However, they are usually less showy.

Uses of Delphinium
Some varieties of the plant are used in folk medicine. Garden holly, on the other hand, is valued for its decorative qualities. It is ideal for both fresh and dry bouquets. It brings a beautiful, intense colour to the latter, without needing to be dyed. It can be combined with echinopseryngiumgomphrena or lagurus. The blue flowers of holly also work well in compositions based on contrast. In this case, they look perfect in the company of mimosalimonium or physalis. On the other hand, pink hollyhocks are a reliable addition to bouquets made from such plants as acroclinium or ammobium. They can be confidently complemented with sorghum or chasmanthium, giving the composition a romantic feel. Pink dried delphinium will also make a great duo with nigellaPampas grass and phalaris will complement the whole effect. They also look great unaccompanied by other plants. It is a good idea to gently separate the branches before placing them in the vase. This gives the composition a lightness. The only thing to remember is that the flowers are very delicate and may fall off.
