Cotton

Cotton and its origin

Cotton (Gossypium) is a fiber plant and comes from Africa. It is characterized by white fibers surrounding the seeds of the plant, which form numerous white tufts on the bushes, resembling cotton wool. Cotton is mainly used in the production of clothing, but it is also successfully used in floristry (in the form of dried cotton stems) to create beautiful bouquets or decorations in a vessel.

What does cotton look like?

Cotton is an inconspicuous plant with many uses. It is an unassuming shrub which, when in flower, develops showy yellow flowers similar in habit to those of hibiscus. After flowering, they develop into distinctive brown seed sacs - when ripe, they burst, revealing numerous tiny seeds covered with white hairs. When the seed sac opens, they look like white, fluffy balls. It is at this stage that the plant is most aesthetically appealing, making it often appear in bouquets and other floral arrangements. Depending on the botanical variety, the colour of the filaments is usually white, but also cream or brownish-yellow. Their length can reach up to 6 cm.

Where does cotton come from?

Natural cotton is found on almost every continent (except Antarctica). Its largest producers are currently China, India and the United States. Growing this plant can be troublesome because it requires cultivation in specific weather conditions. Most of the time, cotton needs strong sunlight, and during ripening - drought. However, you can try to grow its smaller varieties for decoration at home, in the garden or on the balcony.

What are the advantages of cotton?

The greatest advantage of this plant is the possibility of using it in many ways. It is mainly associated with the textile and textile industry, but is also ideal for creating bouquets and decorations. A natural twig of cotton can be used to prepare centerpieces and table decorations. Dried cotton flowers are delicate and look great as an interior decoration.

It can be used to decorate a table, a wedding wall or even woven into a bride's bouquet. It is also worth noting that cotton sprigs look great in any vase - from simple, transparent glass to modern ceramic vessels and beautifully decorated retro vases.

Cotton stems solo or in combination with other plants?

Cottonwood is an extremely showy plant that makes a wonderful ornamental on its own. So it looks beautiful as a solo plant, either as single branches or a few stems in a vase. However, there is nothing stopping you from combining it with other plants - dried or prepared. Dried cotton forms a flagship duo with preserved eucalyptus. It also looks beautiful with palm leaves - in their natural colour as well as in gold or silver. Dried linum and a variety of dried grasses: lagurus, phalaris or pampas grass look good in its company. It can be combined with chasmanthium or ruscus and other dried grasses.

In which bouquet will dried cotton work best?

Dried cotton is perfect for composition in a vase, reed, decoration or as an original gift. It goes perfectly with flowers such as ruscus, broom bloom, chasmanthium, eucalyptus or phalaris. Cotton is such a versatile accessory that, with great success, it can be incorporated into almost any bouquet.

Cotton flowers - for florists and handicraft lovers

Cotton flowers, on the other hand, can be woven into garlands and reeds - including Christmas garlands. Arranging them on Christmas spruce branches is also popular. They are ideal for decorations under a glass dome and as part of 3D paintings. They can also be used to decorate scrapbooking cards, weave them into macramé or decorate gifts. If you put them in a transparent container, they will become a fantastic decoration to warm up your interior in winter.
