Broom Bloom

Broom bloom, or common broom, is a plant belonging to the broad bean family. Under natural conditions, it is found in southern and central Europe. Decades ago, it was used to make brooms. Today, it is most often found growing wild or cultivated in gardens as an ornamental species. It is also great for dry bouquets, which makes it highly valued among florists.

What does Broom Bloom look like?

Broom bloom is distinguished by its shrubby habit. It usually grows in clusters. The rod-shaped, elongated and branched shoots at the top grow up to 2 metres high. They are angular and remain green all year round - even in winter. The stems bear small, rounded leaves. Between May and June, broom broom develops flowers. In the wild, these are yellow in colour. In gardens, you can also find varieties in shades of red, pink or white, or even with multicoloured flowers. After flowering, the plant develops fruit in the form of pods - initially green and then brownish-black, which burst in the sun and release the seeds hidden inside.

Broom Bloom in the wild and in the garden

Under natural conditions, broom bloom grows in areas of southern and central Europe. It is also found in Poland. It is most often found in Pomerania, where it was used to reinforce dunes, and in mountainous areas - mainly in the Sudetes. The plant can also be found in upland and lowland areas of our country. It usually grows in mid-forest clearings and forest edges. In recent years, broom bloom is often found in gardens. It looks great on rockeries and in the company of conifers. It also forms a striking duo with rose bushes and grasses - mainly species that prefer sandy soil. It can be a fantastic background for plants with a finer habit growing in similar conditions, including sedums, thyme, clary sage and horizontal iris.

Another advantage of broom broom is its trouble-free cultivation. The plant grows well in sandy, well-drained and nutrient-poor soils. The only thing it does not tolerate is a substrate with an alkaline pH. The best place to grow broom bloom is in a strong sunny position. All kinds of slopes, embankments and hills are ideal to eliminate the problem of stagnant water which can lead to root rot. The species is resistant to diseases and pests. It also tolerates frost well. However, care should be taken to plant the broom in its intended location, as the stilt root system makes the plant difficult to transplant.

Use of Broom Bloom

Until a few decades ago, broom was valued mainly for its utilitarian qualities. It was primarily used to make brooms. The fibres of the plant were used in the textile industry. In turn, the active substances contained in broom were used to produce medicines. Today, broom bloom is primarily an ornamental plant. It looks great not only in the garden. Its stems are the perfect filling for bouquets and flower arrangements. In addition, dried broom bloom also attracts the attention of florists. Bleached or dyed in various colours, it looks great when placed in a slender glass vase. In this form, it can decorate both homes and public spaces. It works well for decorating wedding and communion halls. Broom bloom is a perfect match for most dryads. It will make a wonderful bouquet with Acroclinium, Physalis, Helichrysum or Craspedia. It can also be paired with GomphrenaAnaphalis or Lunaria. The colourful stems of the broom can also be used to create festive decorations for Christmas or Easter.
