Dried Achillea

More precisely, the yarrow, or Achillea filipendulina "Parker's Variety," is an ornamental garden plant with nearly flat, spreading inflorescences filled with small, densely packed flowers. If the flowers are picked before the pollen matures, the achillea retains its natural yellow color.

Achillea

Yarrow (Achillea filipendulina) is a perennial belonging to the Asteraceae family. Its natural habitat is the Caucasus and the Iranian Plateau. In Europe, it is cultivated in gardens and flowerbeds. It also makes an excellent addition to dried bouquets. Achillea, the "Parker's Variety," has beautiful yellow flowers gathered in corymbs. Cut before the pollen matures, it retains its beautiful, intense color. This allows it to be used in a variety of arrangements. The plant is perfect for vases, cloches, wreaths, and bouquets for special occasions. It is valued not only by florists but also by craft enthusiasts.

What does achillea look like?

Achillea is distinguished by its upright growth habit. Because it has stiff stems, it doesn't bend and doesn't require staking. It grows to a height of 80-150 cm. It has inconspicuous, pinnate, oblong leaves. The most impressive part of the plant is, of course, the inflorescences, which are impressive corymbs composed of numerous small, yellow flower heads. It's worth noting that when in bloom, meadowsweet yarrow emits a distinctive fragrance. It's also a nectar-producing plant and is bee-friendly, which is another reason to invite it to your garden.

Achillea in natural conditions and in the garden

Achillea is native to Asia. In its wild state, the plant primarily inhabits the Caucasus and the Iranian Plateau. It is resistant to unfavorable environmental conditions, including low temperatures and temporary droughts. In Europe, it is found primarily in flowerbeds. It looks impressive in rural and naturalistic gardens. It is also increasingly appearing in modern garden arrangements. It looks excellent alongside other species that make good dried bouquets: limonium, eryngium, and echinops. It can be combined with sedum spectabilis or shrubby cinquefoil. For a romantic setting, it looks great alongside hollyhocks, larkspurs, nasturtiums, and marigolds. In a modern garden, however, meadowsweet yarrow makes a successful pairing with Patagonian verbena or Carolina yucca.

The advantage of this plant is its ease of cultivation. The best location for meadowsweet yarrow is a sunny spot. The species prefers fertile, well-drained, sandy-loam soil, although it also grows well in nutrient-poor soil. It's important to ensure the soil is moderately moist – this will encourage the perennial to develop beautiful, full-blooming inflorescences. Achillea blooms from July to August. It's completely frost-hardy and will easily survive the winter. To do this, prune its shoots close to the ground in late autumn, and new shoots will develop the following season. It's important to remember that the perennial is quite expansive. If left unchecked, it can overwhelm other flowers in the garden.

Uses of achillea

Achillea is a great addition to dried bouquets. In its rustic setting, it pairs beautifully with delphinium, nigella, and linum. It can also be combined with colorful limonium flowers or grasses, including the lagurus. This plant makes a wonderful addition to modern interiors. Dried yellow yarrow looks great on its own, placed in a slender glass vase. It also creates a striking pair with blue echinops or eryngium. Those who enjoy interesting decorations can use a wooden dried flower stand and place individual achillea sprigs in it. The plant also looks great with a glass dome, under which individual stems can be placed. Achillea also makes a great addition to fashionable dried flower wreaths placed on walls or windows.
